Hey there, Pokémon fans! It’s Derek from OMG It’s Derek, and I’ve got an incredible adventure to share with you. My son Tanner and I have been on a mission to track down some Pokémon card packs—specifically those elusive Scarlet and Violet sets—but the holiday rush left the shelves pretty bare. Not ones to give up, we hit up some off-the-beaten-path spots like Five Below and scored a Mimikyu EX box for just $15. Spoiler alert: It was a blast opening it, even if the rare card gods didn’t totally shine on us this time. If you’re into Pokémon card openings and rare finds or just love a good dad-and-son story, keep reading!
The Hunt Begins: Slim Pickings After Christmas
Picture this: Tanner and I, hyped up and ready to snag some Pokémon TCG goodies. We’ve been checking stores since Christmas, but all the popular packs—like Scarlet and Violet—were wiped out. I’d grabbed a few discounted items here and there, but nothing big. So, we decided to get creative and explore places like Five Below, hoping to find some leftover treasures. That’s when we spotted the Mimikyu EX box—four booster packs, two promo cards, and an oversized card, all for a steal. Tanner was pumped, and I was too, especially since I’m on a personal quest to collect every Mimikyu card out there. (Side note: I still trip over saying “Mimikyu”—is it “Mimi-kyu” or “Mim-ick-you”? Help me out!)
What’s in the Mimikyu EX Box?
For those who haven’t cracked one open, here’s the breakdown of the Mimikyu EX box:
- Four booster packs: Fusion Strike, Sword and Shield, Silver Tempest, and Brilliant Stars.
- Two promo cards: Mimikyu EX and Greavard.
- One oversized Mimikyu EX card: Perfect for display (and yes, we sleeved it to keep it pristine).
Tanner and I were stoked to dig in. He was off playing in his room for part of the opening, but his energy from earlier—“We got so many rare Pokémon cards and EX cards, yes sir!”—still echoed in my head as I tore into the packs solo.
The Opening: Some Cool Finds, No Big Hits
Time to rip those packs! I started with the promos: the Mimikyu EX (a must-have for my collection) and Greavard, both slick foils. Then, onto the boosters. Here’s a rundown of some standout cards we pulled across the sets:
- Fusion Strike: A cute Vulpix (yep, the one that evolves into Ninetales) and a sleepy Drowzee with a ridiculous nose.
- Sword and Shield: A reverse holo Litleo with a fiery Psychic vibe—those flames looked awesome.
- Silver Tempest: A tough-looking Ferrithorn (or is it Ferristhorn? I’m terrible with names) and a classic Dragonair.
- Brilliant Stars: A teddy bear-like Cubchoo, a strong Infernape with 160 HP, and one of my faves, Luxray.
Tanner popped in later and flipped out over the Dragonair—“Dad, you won’t believe what this one is!”—and we got a kick out of the Sliggoo and Clamperl too. No ultra-rare hits like a full-art or secret rare, but the haul was solid. The real win? Adding that Mimikyu EX to our growing Mimikyu stash.
Why Pokémon Means So Much to Us
Here’s the thing: Pokémon isn’t just about the cards for me. Sure, the art’s cool (though I’ll always stan Magic: The Gathering’s artwork a bit more), but the real magic is doing this with Tanner. His excitement—whether it’s over a Shinx he wants to collect next or a random Luxray—is what makes it special. We’re even planning collections for Sableye and Shinx because he’s so into them. It’s less about chasing rare Pokémon cards and more about the memories we’re stacking up.

Final Thoughts: The Fun Outshines the Rares
We might not have pulled a game-changing rare this time, but opening that Mimikyu EX box with Tanner (and a little solo action) was a total win. The cards we got—like Dragonair, Luxray, and that sweet reverse holo Litleo—are fantastic additions, and the oversized Mimikyu EX looks dope in its sleeve.
