Having big dreams in life is one of the best parts about being alive. Getting to envision what the future may hold and where you’d like life to take you is part of what it means to be human in my opinion. However, sometimes it’s our dreams that can hold us back from reaching them.
I started thinking about this after finishing a biography of Elon Musk which I also reviewed on this blog.
Elon Musk has a huge dream! Colonizing another planet, specifically Mars, within his lifetime.
This doesn’t mean Musk immediately went out and started his space company SpaceX. He didn’t have the money to do so! In fact, he got started in a field unrelated to space. Finance. He was one of the founders of PayPal.
In my opinion, this shows that Musk knew one very important thing about dreams.
You have to start where you are at now in life. Too many people are looking for short cuts to reaching their dreams and by doing so, never actually reach them!
If you truly want to accomplish your dreams, I believe you must have patience. Patience to put in the time required to possibly do things you may not want to be doing in order to build towards your dreams.
Another excellent example of an entrepreneur doing this is Gary Vaynerchuk. His dream is to own the New York Jets, he got his start helping take a wine business from a 3 million dollar a year company to a 50 million dollar a year company before then going on to start his own media company called VaynerMedia.
He has also now started VaynerSports a full service athlete representation agency. As you can see, he is slowly working towards his dream of owning the Jets.
He started with the opportunities available to him at the present time which happened to be the wine industry.
Too many people dream big dreams, but don’t have the patience to build those dreams and do the work required today! Those that accomplish their dreams understand this and aren’t afraid to patiently work towards those dreams.
Patience is something most people are lacking specifically because we now live in a world where you can have almost anything instantly. Instead of spending hours cooking a meal we can pop something in the microwave or run to a fast food joint and pick up something for a couple dollars.
We can push a button on our phone and have a car ready to pick us up and take us anywhere within a couple minutes.
We can pull out a phone and search the internet for information on just about anything you can think of. We are use to getting what we want and getting it now.
This doesn’t work when it comes to dreams. Dreams take hard work, dedication and most importantly patience to keep at them through all life’s ups and downs.
If you truly want to accomplish your dreams. Start by building patience.
